Approach to therapy
Understanding a difficulty does not always change an automatic response. Shelley works with people who may know how they would prefer to think, feel or behave, yet find familiar patterns taking over. Others arrive feeling overwhelmed and unsure where to begin.
Her work includes anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, grief, confidence and burnout. She also supports the psychological aspects of fertility difficulties, perimenopause and menopause, cancer and other health conditions.
BWRT is central to her practice. Developed by Terence Watts, this structured approach aims to change unwanted automatic responses. Clients help define their goals and preferred responses, with their values, cultural background and circumstances informing the work. Suitability is assessed individually; outcomes and treatment length vary.
Shelley also draws on training in Brainspotting Levels 1 and 2, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT) Level 1, Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), psychodynamic therapy, mindfulness, play-based approaches and sand tray work.
Working with children
Sessions are adapted to the child’s age, development and ways of communicating. Children are actively involved in identifying meaningful goals, while parent guidance helps support progress beyond sessions.
Both therapy and assessment begin with a parent consultation. Formal cognitive, learning and ADHD assessments take place in person and in English only. Findings are discussed in a feedback session, with a written report and recommendations. Online therapy is generally considered from age six, subject to a suitability trial.
Qualifications and professional roles
Shelley holds a Master’s degree in Clinical Psychology from the University of Zululand and is trained in BWRT Levels 1, 2 and 3. She is an officially designated supervisor for BWRT South Africa and the Terence Watts Institute, supporting practitioners nationally and internationally.
